Know The Difference Between 4 Common Office Dress Codes

Depending on your career, you may already know how to follow an office dress code. But, there is always room for improvement when it comes to style and fashion. Some businesses are more lenient about work attire, while others want you to come in a full suit and tie. Knowing your industry standards is crucial to conquering the dress code and maintaining your position in the workplace.

Continue reading to learn the difference between 4 common office dress codes:

Business Formal

Let’s start with the most fancy of all dress codes — Business formal. This dress code establishes the highest level of professionalism, which typically includes tailored suits and ties for men. Think about the apparel that men wear to dressy events or ceremonies that require the utmost effort to portray respect. Pro tip — The darker the suit, the more formal! Don’t forget to add some polished accessories.

Business Professional

Many people believe that Business Formal and Business Professional are interchangeable, but there are slight differences between the two codes. While they both portray a high level of professionalism, Business Professional dress code requirements are a little more relaxed. One step down from Business Formal, this dress code is still conservative and traditional, but has more flexibility when it comes to colors and patterns. Instead of a full suit and tie look, you can opt for blazers, polos, sweaters, and slacks.

Business Casual

One of the most common dress codes out there is business casual. Think of it as a blend of business professional and casual wear. Instead of reaching for those high-end suits, ties, slacks, and blazers, you can wear sports coats, polos, khakis, trousers, vests, and more! It’s the perfect time to be dressy, fresh, and sharp, but also more laid-back than business professional attire.

In terms of the 3 dress codes mentioned above, you should always wear dress shoes or closed-toed shoes such as loafers, oxfords, or brogues. Consider adding in fashionable belts, watches, and other accessories to add more of a business touch.

Casual

When you hear the word casual, your mind may gravitate toward your weekend attire such as shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, and sandals. However, it’s imperative that you uphold a level of professionalism in the workplace. Casual dress codes must still follow business attire, but you can wear chinos, jeans, button-down shirts, polos, crew-neck sweaters, and t-shirts.

Depending on the company standards, you can  get away with wearing sneakers or cargo shorts. Keep in mind that you should always avoid t-shirts with graphics or offensive messages. Just because the dress code is casual does not mean you should come in wearing a wrinkled or stained outfit. This dress code is established with comfort and leisure in mind, but must still be appropriate and professional at all times.
